Community Guidelines
What’s allowed, how to report and what happens when rules are broken.
The short version
TakeTurn is for real moments between real friends. To keep it that way:
- Be real. Use your real first name and a real photo of you. One person, one account.
- Be 18 or older. No exceptions.
- Be kind. No harassment, bullying, threats or hate.
- Keep it clothed. No nudity or sexual content. Anything sexual involving minors is reported to the authorities.
- Keep it safe and legal. No violence, terrorism, illegal goods, spam or scams.
- Respect privacy. Ask before you capture someone. Don't share other people's Takes or personal details.
- Report and block anything that feels wrong. A real person on our team will look at it.
Our Safety Center explains our safety features, and our Child Safety Standards explain our zero-tolerance policy on child sexual abuse and exploitation.
If you break these rules, we may warn you, limit or suspend your account, remove it, or ban you permanently. We'll always tell you why, and you can appeal anything that restricts your account.
1. Why we have these guidelines
1.1. TakeTurn is about trading real moments. A Take is a photo you capture with the TakeTurn camera and send to friends. To see a friend's Take, you send one back.
1.2. That only works if everyone feels safe and respected. These guidelines explain what that means in practice. They apply to everything on TakeTurn: Takes, captions, profile photos, names, usernames, references and reports.
1.3. These guidelines are part of our Terms of Service. Breaking them can lead to action on your account (see Section 13). Some of the things listed here are also crimes, and we work with the authorities when the law requires it.
1.4. We can't list every situation. If something is clearly harmful, it isn't allowed, even if it isn't named here. When in doubt, don't send it.
1.5. Behavior outside TakeTurn. We may also act on serious harm that happens outside TakeTurn, such as threats, sextortion or the sexual exploitation of children, where it involves TakeTurn users and creates a real risk to people on TakeTurn.
2. Be real
2.1. Use your real first name. Not a nickname that pretends to be someone else, not a brand, not a joke name.
2.2. Use a real photo of you as your profile photo. It should clearly show your face. No celebrities, cartoons, pets, memes, AI-generated faces or photos of other people.
2.3. Don't pretend to be someone else. No impersonating real people, including friends, public figures, our team or TakeTurn itself. Parody accounts aren't allowed either.
2.4. One account per person. Don't create extra accounts, share an account, or sell or transfer one. Don't make a new account to get around a block, limit, suspension or removal.
2.5. Be honest during verification. Your verification selfie must be a live photo of you, matching your profile photo. Don't use someone else's photo, a photo of a screen, a mask or an edited image. Our moderators review selfies only to confirm a real person is behind the account. Selfies are never shown to other users and are deleted right after the decision.
2.6. Use references honestly. Only act as a reference for people you actually know, who are real and 18 or older. Don't sell, trade or give away references.
3. 18+ only
3.1. You must be at least 18 to use TakeTurn. Enter your real birthday at sign-up. We use it only to check your age, and nobody else can see it.
3.2. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 18, we remove it.
3.3. If you believe someone on TakeTurn is under 18, please report their account (choose "May be under 18"). They won't know it was you.
4. Be kind
4.1. No harassment or bullying. Don't send Takes or captions meant to shame, humiliate, intimidate or upset someone. Don't keep contacting someone who has made it clear they don't want to hear from you. Don't organize others to target someone.
4.2. No hate. Don't attack, threaten or demean people based on race, ethnicity, national origin, caste, religion, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, serious illness, age or immigration status. This includes slurs, hateful symbols, and harmful stereotypes.
4.3. No unwanted contact. If someone removes you as a friend or blocks you, respect that. Don't use other accounts or other people to reach them.
4.4. Disagreeing is fine. Being rude, cruel or threatening is not.
5. No nudity or sexual content
5.1. TakeTurn is not a place for sexual content. Don't send nudity, sexual acts, sexually suggestive close-ups, or sexual captions, even to friends who say they want it.
5.2. No sexual harassment. Don't send unwanted sexual comments, requests or images. Don't pressure anyone to send intimate content.
5.3. No sextortion. Threatening to share someone's intimate images, or demanding money, images or anything else in exchange for not sharing them, is a serious crime. We ban the account permanently and immediately and may report it to the authorities.
5.4. No non-consensual intimate images. Never share, or threaten to share, intimate images of anyone without their consent, including images that are real, edited or AI-generated ("deepfakes"). If an intimate image of you was shared on TakeTurn without your consent, you can ask us to remove it, even without an account. We remove it within 48 hours of a valid request, or within 24 hours if you live in India. See Section 8 of our Safety Center.
5.5. Zero tolerance for anything involving minors. Any content that sexually exploits, sexualizes or endangers a child is strictly forbidden. This includes images, captions, drawings, edited or AI-generated content, and any attempt to groom or solicit a minor. When we find it:
- we remove the content and permanently ban the account immediately;
- we block the Apple or Google account from registering again; and
- we preserve the content and report it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), as US law requires. NCMEC works with law enforcement around the world.
If you see anything like this, report it right away. Please don't capture, save or forward it, even to report it. Use the report option in the app, or the form at taketurn.co/support. Our full Child Safety Standards are part of these guidelines.
6. No violence, threats or terrorism
6.1. No threats. Don't threaten to hurt anyone, or their family, pets or property. Don't make "jokes" that sound like real threats. We take credible threats very seriously and may tell the authorities.
6.2. No graphic violence. Don't send gory, shocking or violent images, such as serious injuries, cruelty to people or animals, or dead bodies.
6.3. No terrorism or violent extremism. Don't support, praise, promote or recruit for terrorist or violent extremist groups or acts.
6.4. No dangerous activities. Don't encourage others to do things that could seriously hurt them or others, such as dangerous challenges.
7. Self-harm and suicide
7.1. We want everyone on TakeTurn to be okay. Don't send content that promotes, encourages or glorifies suicide, self-harm or eating disorders, or that gives instructions for them.
7.2. If you're struggling, you're not alone, and you don't need to go through it by yourself. Please reach out to someone you trust, or contact a crisis line:
- In an emergency, call your local emergency number (for example 911 in the US, or 112 in the EU).
- US: call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline).
- UK and Ireland: call Samaritans on 116 123.
- Elsewhere: find a free, confidential helpline in your country at findahelpline.com.
More resources are in our Safety Center.
7.3. If you're worried about a friend, reach out to them, and report the Take so our team can help. Reporting a Take about self-harm isn't about getting anyone in trouble. We focus on support. If we believe someone is in immediate danger, we may contact emergency services.
8. No illegal goods or activities
8.1. Don't use TakeTurn to buy, sell, promote or arrange:
- illegal drugs or the misuse of prescription drugs;
- weapons, ammunition or explosives;
- stolen goods, counterfeit products or fake documents;
- human trafficking, sexual services or exploitation of any kind;
- gambling; or
- anything else that is illegal where you or the recipient live.
8.2. Don't share content that encourages or shows how to commit crimes.
9. No spam or scams
9.1. TakeTurn is for personal use. Don't use it to advertise, sell or promote anything, including other apps, accounts or social media profiles.
9.2. No spam. Don't send the same Take or caption to lots of people, mass-send friend requests to strangers, or use bots, scripts or automation.
9.3. No scams. Don't trick people into giving money, personal details, account access or verification codes. Don't run fake giveaways, investment schemes or romance scams.
9.4. No fake engagement. Don't sell, buy or trade streaks, catches, references or accounts, or try to boost them with fake accounts.
10. Respect other people's privacy
10.1. Ask before you capture someone. Only send Takes of other people if they're okay with it. Never capture people in private moments or places where they expect privacy, such as bathrooms, changing rooms or bedrooms.
10.2. No doxxing. Don't share anyone's private information, such as their home address, phone number, ID documents, financial details, workplace or school in a way that puts them at risk, or private messages.
10.3. Don't share other people's Takes. A Take is meant for the people it was sent to, once. Don't capture, save, forward or post anyone else's Takes, inside or outside TakeTurn, without their permission.
10.4. Be careful with what's in the background. Before you send, check that your Take doesn't accidentally show someone else's private information, or your own (like a letter with your address).
11. Respect screenshots
11.1. Takes are designed to disappear. Taking a screenshot or screen recording of someone's Take goes against the spirit of TakeTurn.
11.2. TakeTurn blocks screenshots and screen recordings while a Take is on screen. Where the phone tells the app about an attempt to capture, record or mirror the screen, we notify the person whose Take was on screen. Capturing or sharing someone's Take without their consent is against these Guidelines, even if you manage to do it.
11.3. Please know: no app can stop every capture. Someone could photograph the screen with another phone, for example, or a rare system error could let a capture through. So only send Takes you'd be comfortable with if they were kept, and only to people you trust.
11.4. Capturing or sharing someone's Take to harass, shame, threaten or expose them is a serious violation. It may also be a crime, especially for intimate images.
12. Reporting and blocking
If something feels wrong, you can report it. A real person on our team reviews every report.
12.1. How to report a Take
- In Chats, press and hold the card of the person who sent it.
- Tap Report and block, then choose Something they sent me.
- Choose the reason that fits best.
A Take report covers what that person sent you in the last 24 hours. We keep an encrypted safety copy of Takes you received for up to 24 hours just for this, so you can report a Take even after it has disappeared. After 24 hours, the copy is deleted and we may not be able to review it, so please report quickly.
12.2. How to report an account
- Press and hold their card in Chats, or open their profile and tap Report and block.
- Choose what's wrong with the account, such as their profile photo, name, pretending to be someone else, being under 18, or spam.
12.3. What happens when you report
- They're blocked automatically. When you report someone, they are also blocked, so they can't send you Takes or friend requests.
- They won't know it was you. We never tell anyone who reported them.
- A person reviews it. Our moderation team looks at every report and decides what to do based on these guidelines and the law.
- Verified reports matter more for early safety measures. When enough different verified users report the same account within a short time, the account is limited (no sending Takes or adding friends) until a moderator reviews the case. It is never suspended or removed automatically. Every report, verified or not, is still reviewed by a person.
- You'll hear back. We tell you what we decided in the TakeTurn chat.
- Please report honestly. Filing false reports on purpose is against these guidelines.
12.4. Blocking and removing friends
You can block someone or remove them as a friend at any time, from their profile. You don't need to give a reason.
12.5. Reporting without the app
Anyone, including people who don't use TakeTurn, can report illegal content, a safety concern or an under-18 account through the form at taketurn.co/support or by email (Section 15). Please include the username, what happened, when, and why you think it breaks the rules or the law. We'll confirm we received it and tell you what we decided.
12.6. Emergencies
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services first. TakeTurn is not an emergency service.
13. What happens when rules are broken
13.1. We look at the whole picture. Our team considers how serious the violation was, whether it was intentional, its impact on others, whether it was illegal, and the person's history on TakeTurn.
13.2. The usual steps. For most violations, we follow these steps, getting stricter if problems continue:
| Step | What it means |
|---|---|
| 1. Warning | We tell you which rule you broke. Your account keeps working normally. |
| 2. Temporary limit | For a set time, you can look around the app, but you can't send or reply to Takes or add friends. |
| 3. Temporary suspension | For a set time, you can't use your account. A countdown shows when it's back. |
| 4. Account removal | Your account is removed and your username stays reserved. |
| 5. Permanent ban | Your account is closed for good, and the Apple or Google account you signed up with can't be used on TakeTurn again. |
We may also remove content, your references or your ability to give references.
Sometimes we need to review an account before deciding anything, for example if it may belong to someone under 18. While we review it, the account works as if suspended, and we may ask you to verify your age or tell us more. This usually takes less than 24 hours.
13.3. Severe violations mean a permanent ban. For the most serious violations, we skip straight to a permanent ban. Severe violations include:
- any sexual content involving minors, or grooming;
- credible threats of violence;
- terrorism or violent extremism;
- sextortion or sharing intimate images without consent;
- trafficking or exploitation; and
- serious fraud or scams.
Where the law requires, we report these to the authorities, and we always report apparent child sexual abuse material to NCMEC.
13.4. We'll tell you why. When we take action, we send you a message in the official, read-only "TakeTurn" chat in the app. It explains what we did, why, which rule was involved, how long it lasts (if temporary), and how to appeal. In rare cases, we may not be able to give full details, for example if the law prevents it or it could put someone at risk.
13.5. Your friends aren't punished. While your account is limited, suspended or under review, your streaks are paused and don't break, Takes in progress are canceled without anyone missing them, and your friends simply see that you're unavailable for now. If your account is removed or banned, it quietly leaves your friends' lists. We never tell them why.
13.6. Logging out never deletes anything. Before anything is deleted, the app always shows you exactly what you'll lose and asks you to confirm. Our Terms of Service, Section 11.8, explains what deleting your account or creating a new one means after a removal or ban.
14. Appeals
14.1. We make mistakes sometimes. If you think we got it wrong, please tell us.
14.2. What you can appeal. A temporary limit, a suspension, an account removal, a permanent ban, or the removal of something you shared (a Take, a caption or your profile photo). A warning on its own doesn't restrict your account, so it can't be appealed, and neither can a review that hasn't led to a decision yet. If we removed content along with a warning, you can appeal the removal, and if we reverse it, the warning goes too. We can't bring back a Take, because Takes are temporary, but we correct our records.
14.3. How to appeal:
- In the app, tap Appeal on the screen that shows your account's status, or open the decision in the TakeTurn chat; or
- without signing in, use the form at taketurn.co/support (choose "Appeal a decision"), or email us (Section 15), with your username and the decision you're appealing.
Appeals are free. You can appeal each decision once, within 6 months. Tell us why you think the decision was wrong.
14.4. Who decides. Someone who didn't make the original decision reviews your appeal whenever possible. We tell you the result in the TakeTurn chat and by email. If we got it wrong, we restore your account as it was, including your friends, streaks and username. If the decision stays, we tell you why.
14.5. If you reported something and disagree with our decision, tap Appeal under the result message in the TakeTurn chat, or ask for a review in Settings > Report an issue or at taketurn.co/support.
14.6. If you live in the EU (or in Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein once the DSA applies there), you may have other options too, such as a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body. See Section 11 of our Terms of Service and our DSA page.
15. Changes and questions
15.1. We may update these guidelines as TakeTurn grows. We'll let you know in the app about important changes.
15.2. Contact us. For anything (privacy, safety, legal or general), write to support@taketurn.co, use Settings > Report an issue in the app, or the form at taketurn.co/support. Post: the provider named in Section 1.1 of our Terms of Service.
Thanks for helping keep TakeTurn real, kind and safe.
